Dianne Lake Reveals New Details About Charles Manson And The Manson Family

Dianne Lake, the youngest and arguably most famous member of the ‘Manson Family’, has finally opened up about her time in the murderous Californian cult. Ms. Lake, a mother to three children, is also breaking silence on her own relationship with the cult’s leader, Charles Manson.

Ms. Lake, 64, revealed that she was seduced by Manson as a young girl, telling interviewers from ‘Good Morning America’ that the pair had sex while she was still a teenager.

"He made you feel like you were his one and only love, you know?" Ms. Lake said to Amy Robach, a co-anchor for Good Morning America. "And yes, there were other girls, but we all shared him. He made you feel really special, and specially loved."

Ms. Lake’s interview coincides with the release of her new book, a tell-all memoir called ‘Member of the Family’. In her memoir, Ms. Lake describes her destructive fixation with Manson and shares “never-heard-before” details about his skills as a manipulator.

Ms. Lake, who has retired from her career as a special education teacher, first came across Charles Manson, who was 34 at the time, at a college party. That same night, the pair had sex, with Ms. Lake telling Ms. Robach: "It seemed very natural and loving and kind of like a game…He was cute, impish. You know, fun."

Over the following weeks, Ms. Lake spent more and more time with Manson and eventually fell in love with the cult leader. For the next two years, Ms. Lake would live with a group of people, Patricia Krenwinkel, Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, and Tex Watson, that would later be involved in a slew of murders.

In ‘Member of the Family’, Ms. Lake gives her own recount of her time with the Manson family, sharing her initial impressions of the people surrounding Manson. "Patty Krenwinkel was just the sweetest--humble, loving woman," said Ms. Lake.

"Leslie was, like, your quintessential prom queen...even though I hadn't been to high school yet, that's how she came off to me. We weren't really that close because she just came from a whole different value set than I had…[Tex Watson] was more of a big brother to me," added Lake. "Taught me how to drive...he looked out after me."

However, Ms. Lake’s time with the Manson family quickly turned dark when Manson began psychologically and sexually abusing the people who looked up to him. According to Ms. Lake, Manson would often talk about his race war, Helter Skelter, and frequently urged his charges to take up knives and kick-start the war for America’s soul.

Ms. Lake swears that, at the time, she didn’t know that other members of the Manson family had killed seven people.

However, when she found out, Ms. Lake quickly realized she was in over her head. "We were arrested in October and it wasn't until December that I finally felt comfortable enough before the grand jury to tell them, 'I'm Dianne Lake. I'm 16 and I want my mommy.'"

Now, years after Charles Manson’s arrest, Ms. Lake has finally moved past the traumatic childhood experience.

"It's taken me this long really to get to the point where I can admit or have been able to realize that I really was a victim," she told ‘Good Morning America’. "I feel very unburdened and I feel untethered from the shame of being associated with this person who has become the icon of evil."
