Dentist Takes A Video Of Maggots Wriggling Around Woman's Gums

A truly revolting video has gone viral after thousands of viewers declared that it was the most disgusting clip they have ever seen.

The video, showing the moment a dentist comes face to face with a swarm of wriggling maggots in a patient’s mouth, is believed to have been taken by a dentist in India. The 56-second-long video shows the slimly worm-like larvae wriggling beneath the patient’s bottom lip.

Considering her long hair, the patient appears to be a female. The infestation of maggots seems to be concentrated in the bottom left-hand corner of the woman’s mouth, swarming and wriggling while the dentist shines light on her gums.

The video also shows that the patient is connected to some form of breathing apparatus while the dentist surveys the extent of the infestation.

The woman’s gums, eroded and reddened by long-term neglect and infection, indicate that the patient has never been taught the importance of dental hygiene. The unnamed woman’s teeth are yellowed and protruding from the unhealthy gyms, an obvious sign of poor oral hygiene and a common indicator of oral myiasis.

Originally posted on LiveLeak, this video has already received over 3000 views and several hundred comments.

Although there is no official diagnosis for the woman’s oral condition, experts believe that the patient is suffering from myiasis – a term that is rooted in the Latin words ‘myia’ (fly) and ‘iasis’ (disease).

When someone ingests food that contains fly larvae, the remnant of food in the patient’s mouth can allow some maggots to remain in the patient’s mouth, feeding on the living and rotting tissue of their gums. Oral myiasis is most common in countries with lower socio-economic and development indices. Warmer and more humid climates also create a higher chance of developing the condition.

Further research on the subject has determined that Myasis can also affect a subject’s ears and nose. However, nasal and aural myiasis are considered more dangerous than oral myiasis.

This is because the maggots have a higher chance of penetrating into your brain. In these cases, the fatality rate is 8 percent.

After seeing the revolting video, online commenters have responded with both humor and disgust. A mother on the Daily Mail, with the username ‘Lollipop’, wrote that the video was a good way to get her children to brush their teeth.

“I’ve just shown this to my two boys 11 and 7. Best advert to get kids to brush their teeth!” she wrote. “They both shot upstairs and brushed their teeth thoroughly for a full 2 minutes! Result!”

Another commenter, Ozark, emphasized that the maggots were likely helping the unnamed patient: “Pull those teeth, give her a set of George Washingtons and call it good. Those maggots cleaner her up and kept the good tissue healthy as could be.”

Meanwhile, ‘ILiveOnMars’ couldn’t move past the nauseating clip, writing: “Omg that's the most disgusting and disturbing thing I've ever seen. This image will haunt me for years!”
