Deadly Drug Crisis Claims Two Grandmother and Grandson from Same Pennsylvanian Family

A family from Pennsylvania has been impacted by America’s drug crisis in a truly horrific way after a grandmother and her grandson died from an overdose of fentanyl. According to America Web Media, Theresa Plummer, the man’s 69-year-old grandmother, passed away after coming into contact with fentanyl, an opioid often prescribed by doctors to treat minor to moderate pain, while cleaning up the room her grandson fatally overdosed in.
A report from the Cambria County Coroner supported this view, emphasizing that Ms. Plummer overdosed on a small amount of the opioid-based painkiller while scrubbing the bathroom her grandson, 45-year-old Ronald Plummer, was found unresponsive in after using an enormous dose of fentanyl.
After Mr. Plummer was found by his family members, the young man was taken to the Intensive Care Unit. Shortly afterward, the middle-aged man’s mother left work to accompany him to hospital. Unable to travel long distances, Mr. Plummer’s grandmother decided to make herself useful by cleaning the bathroom her grandson used drugs in.
After an initial investigation, police, and paramedics concluded that Ms. Plummer’s pre-death symptoms matched those of a fentanyl overdose. American Web Media reports that Ms. Plummer began to struggle to breathe after cleaning the bathroom. As the symptoms worsened, Ms. Plummer called paramedics and was rushed to the same hospital her grandson was being treated at.
The day after Ms. Plummer arrived at her hospital, doctors responded to the elderly woman’s crashing vital signs. Minutes later, hospital officials recorded her death as an accidental exposure and overdose from fentanyl. On the same day, Ms. Plummer’s grandson also died from a fentanyl overdose.

The horrifying incident has attracted the attention of regional narcotics investigators and enforcement agents. Although no conclusions have been reached, the investigators believe that Ms. Plummer and her grandson both passed away from an opioid overdose. However, at this stage, it will take several months before toxicology samples definitively confirm an official cause of death for Theresa and Ronald.
A funeral and memorial for the pair were recently held in Pennsylvania. The funeral was held on Veteran’s Day and was attended by family members and dozens of local residents. “She enjoyed rescuing animals and spending time with her family,” read Ms. Plummer’s obituary.
The enormous death toll from opioid overdoses continues to rise across America. In fact, the situation has become so bad that President Trump declared it a national health crisis. However, this announcement remains largely symbolic, and federal funds continue to be withheld from hospitals and public health initiatives.
Fortunately, some of America’s biggest pharmaceutical companies are taking action to address the increasingly deadly health emergency sweeping across the country. CVS Health is taking steps to monitor and reduce opioid-based prescriptions. Fentanyl remains one of the most potent opioid-based killers. Highly potent, the painkiller can be absorbed through the skin, and even small amounts can be deadly for innocent bystanders.
After a chain of deadly incidents involving fentanyl, the DEA circulated a “must read” press release for emergency responders, urging police and paramedics to be particularly careful around scenes of drug overdoses.
