Day Care Worker Arrested For Burning Toddlers With Hot Glue Gun

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and occasionally a child can get accidentally hurt when a dangerous object is left in his or her reach. Even the most competent parents and child care workers can goof, but there are times when there is just no excuse for certain mistakes.

One day care worker is facing charges after not one, but five, children in her care suffered burns from a hot glue gun. The woman has been accused of using the device as a form of punishment.

Chicago day care worker Lizandra Cosme was arrested and charged with five felony counts of aggravated battery to a child after she allegedly used the hot glue gun to deliberately hurt five toddlers. Cosme was working with two-year-old kids at the Children’s Learning Place, according to WBBM, and was caught on camera injuring the children intentionally.

Three girls and two boys were injured in the December 1 incident. She brought the hot glue gun to work with her that day to use it in making a Christmas project. Some parents complained that their kids were coming home with burns, and several reported similar injuries.

Supervisors at the day care became suspicious and reviewed video from the day. The video allegedly shows Cosme causing the burns by applying the hot glue directly on the hands and arms of the children. According to reports later from the prosecutor, the children winced and cried out when the hot glue was applied on them.

When burn marks began to appear, the day care worker then attempted to put Neosporin on the injuries. After shocked employers viewed the videos, they immediately called police and Child Protective Services to report the incident. Police went to Cosme’s home to arrest her.

Another adult who was present in the classroom when the injuries took place but did not intervene was arrested and given a lesser charge. Susana D. Gonzalez, the 27-year-old worker who was there when the injuries took place, has been charged with five misdemeanor counts of causing circumstances for child endangerment.

The day care center has since fired both employees.

“The well-being of our students is paramount. Upon learning of the alleged incident, we notified DCFS immediately and terminated two of our employees. We are currently working with investigators,” said an email from the day care's spokesperson.

Cosme's husband and sister came to the ex-day care provider's hearing and told CBS News that she's innocent. Her husband claims his wife made a mistake and never intended to maliciously hurt the children.

According to the family, Cosme lost a sister in October and has been distraught and depressed ever since. They don’t believe she was thinking clearly when the incident occurred.

In her mug shot, Cosme is sporting a black eye, though it’s unclear how she got it. For the time being Cosme has been denied bail and won't be home for Christmas. Her next court date is set for December 26.

Several parents who heard about the incident with the day care worker say they don’t believe the Children’s Learning Place is responsible for the incident, and they don’t feel compelled to pull their children out of the program.
