Dad Arrested After Dropping Off Underaged Teens at Park So They Could Have Sex

A lot of teenagers are having sex these days, and sometimes it feels like adults are helpless to stop it. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just arm them with the information they need to keep themselves safe and hope they make good choices.

Helping kids along is probably not a good idea, especially when the kids are as young as 15 years old. That’s why one dad was arrested after telling police that he dropped his son and his son’s girlfriend off at the park so that they could ‘do their thang’.

Lawrence Mitchell, a dad in Port St. Lucie, Florida, was stopped by police near a public park one night two weeks ago. The 53-year-old man was asked why he was lurking around the park at around 11:30 pm, long after hours. Most parks in Florida close automatically at dusk, and signs are posted all over the place.

After some talking to the police, he finally came clean and gave them the reason. He told them he brought his 15-year-old son and his girlfriend to the park so that the two could have sex. It may have been honest, but it wasn’t an explanation the police expected to hear. He was promptly arrested.

Mitchell initially played coy with the officers when they asked him why he dropped the two youngsters off, telling them, “So they can do what kids do.“

When they pressed him for a better explanation, according to the arrest report, Mitchell said, “Well they aren’t out there stealing, they are just having sex.”

The father said his son, whose name is not being released because he’s still a minor, asked him if he could drive him to pick up his girlfriend and bring them to a park for a sexual encounter. Mitchell said he agreed to help his son.

Police asked Mitchell if he spoke to the girl’s parents about the arrangement or get their permission, the father admitted he did not. Mitchell defended the teens saying, “They could be out there doing worse.”

Some of the officers ventured into the park to search for the teens and found them walking back from a soccer field. An officer asked the teens what they were doing out in the park so late, and the boy responded, “Just smoking and f—king.”

The teen couple confirmed that Mitchell had driven them there, but they did say they didn’t know if the adult knew what he was driving them there to do.

Mitchell was taken to the county jail where he was booked and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was released on $750 bail, and has a court appearance set for next week.

The children were reportedly not arrested.

The age of consent in Florida is 18, with provisions that minors as young as 16 can consent to sex with a person between the ages of 18 and 23. Sex in a public place is always illegal though, regardless of age, and at the very minimum can lead to indecent exposure charges. Trespassing in public parks after they close is also illegal and can lead to charges.
