Customers Who Dine At This Restaurant Can Only Have One Drink If They Are With Their Kids

A New York restaurant, Peddlers Bar and Bistro in Clifton Park, has responded to public criticism of its one-drink policy for parents who eat at the establishment with children. According to Fox News, Peddlers Bar and Bistro enforces a strict one-drink limit when customers have driven to the restaurant with one child or more.

The restaurant’s general manager, Melisa Gravelle, has defended the highly-publicized rule in the lead-up to summer. “We love children,” Ms. Gravelle said during an interview with WKBN. “Everybody loves children and children don’t have a voice.”

Ms. Gravelle continued to emphasize the potential life-saving benefits of the restaurant rule, adding: “I could never live with myself knowing that I killed somebody driving. I could never do that; it’s a choice that you can avoid.”

During her appearance on WKBN, Ms. Gravelle told viewers that any customer who didn’t follow the restaurant rules would be asked to leave the establishment. Ms. Gravelle also spoke about the abusive response from some patrons.

“They (servers) do get berated at the tables and some come back very upset,” Gravelle said. “The managers go to the table and they explain we’re not picking on parents, it’s just something that we feel in our hearts is something that we can do in order to help.”

However, despite the criticism from some customers, many members of the public have spoken out in support of the new rule. “Why take the chance? Definitely doesn’t make any sense,” says long-term customer Greg Culver. “That way you keep those people off the road.”

“I’m a former educator and I think it’s a great policy,” Barb Buckley, another regular diner at Peddlers Bar and Bistro. “When you think about the responsibility that a parent has to protect their children, I think it’s a great policy. I’m behind them 100 percent.”

According to Fox News, the owner of Peddlers Bar and Bistro decided to first introduce the rule in 2010, but it has been refined and adapted every year since. Although the restaurant doesn’t actually have the legal means to enforce the rule, local authorities continue to regard it as a safe and reasonable practice.

Online commenters remain polarized by the rules at the restaurant. Many social media users have criticized the restaurant owner for refusing to serve honest and responsible parents. “The owners must be Democrats who want to control everything people do. How about letting responsible parents decide what's best?” wrote ‘Kafir29’.

‘Vike29’ quickly jumped back, writing: “Because after 6 beers when they are driving their kids home, how responsible are they?”

Another Fox News commenter responded that there was no need for Peddlers Bar and Bistro to limit alcohol consumption beyond the preexisting legal limit.

“So establishments that serve alcohol already have a legal responsibility not to over-serve (in many areas, restaurants who do so share liability if the over-served customer hurts someone while driving home),” wrote ‘KPRawr096. “Why impose another (ridiculous) limit? Why not just enforce the legal standards? This is dumb and authoritarian. I hope the market drives them under.”
