Creators Of "Game Of Thrones" Reveal New Show - Premise Draws Tons Of Backlash

Based on the fact that the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ is such a smash hit, you would think that the announcement that the creators of that series had plans in the works for a new show would be greeted with a ton of enthusiasm. As we saw yesterday, that theory proved to be misguided.

As the Daily Mail shares, it has been announced that David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the brains behind GoT, will write and direct a new original series named ‘Confederate.’ The enthusiasm over that piece of news went by the wayside pretty quickly once folks realized what the show was about.

Confederate will depict an alternate reality in which the southern portion of the United States successfully seceded in the wake of the Civil War. As such, slavery is still legal in those states. A statement from HBO notes that the show will explore themes such as freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, journalists and abolitionists on both sides of the divide, but many observers couldn’t get past the slavery component.

That’s putting it mildly, as social media quickly erupted with its latest firestorm.

“Confederate is akin to making a movie about never defeating Nazi Germany and allowing the holocaust to continue,” shared one user.

“Like even if Confederate is critical of current day racism, do we need another series about the suffering of POC, written by white men?” shared another user.

On the Nazi Germany front, there actually has been a show about World War II ending differently, but that’s another story for another day. Slavery is obviously an incredibly sensitive subject, but perhaps some more information about the plans for the series would be helpful before rushing to rip it.

“Game of thrones just got called out for not having enough diversity and then the writers came up with #Confederate,” added one user.

“Are Confederate writers too rich to actually know the racial climate that they actually live in? Because this is so not a good idea,” chimed in another user.

Prior to inking a deal with HBO to make Confederate into a series, Benioff and Weiss considered making a simple feature film. Based on the runaway success of GoT, which the pair adapted from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Firebooks', it’s pretty easy to see why HBO would want to give this one a whirl. However, it’s safe to say the potential backlash wasn’t properly thought through.

Or perhaps it was, and this is simply part of creating the all-important ‘buzz’ about a new project. Confederate is a world away from GoT plotlines, which features themes such as dragons, undead armies and magic in a medieval setting where warring factions scheme and battle for control over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. You can be sure Confederate will be chock full of drama as well, but early returns suggest that it won’t be as well received.

Perhaps the announcement was merely a trial balloon, or an attempt to get the outrage out of the way before the show came to life. Either way, it’ll be awfully interesting to see how this behind-the-scenes drama plays out.
