Couple Survive Las Vegas Massacre Only To Die In Car Crash

A man and woman who escaped the recent shooting rampage in Las Vegas unharmed died two weeks later in a traffic accident, according to AOL.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the couple, Dennis and Lorraine Carter, were killed Oct. 16 when their car slammed into a metal gate guarding their neighborhood in California’s Riverside County. The vehicle exploded in a fireball that the couple’s youngest daughter could hear from the family home.

The country-music fans were still recovering psychologically from their terrifying experience at the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest festival on Oct. 1. They were among those in the crowd at the outdoor concert who survived a spray of bullets unleashed by Stephen Paddock. The Nevada resident murdered 58 people and injured hundreds of others with semi-automatic rifles he fired from his 32nd-floor hotel room across the street from the festival.

Following the tragedy, Dennis Carver recalled that he believed he was hearing fireworks before realizing he and the other concertgoers were under siege. He responded by getting on top of his wife, on the ground, to protect her from the gunfire. According to Newsweek, Lorraine Carter wrote on Facebook: “I have the most amazing husband. Not only did he shield my body during the shooting in Las Vegas and guide me to safety, but then he sends me flowers today. I am blessed.”

“That’s just the kind of love they had for each other,” 20-year-old daughter Brooke Carver said in a Review-Journal interview. “Their love was selfless. After the shooting, they heard from all of the people they cared about most. They were so happy. The last two weeks of their lives were really just spent living in the moment. … We were so relieved when they got out of the shooting alive. But I also think we’ve been given little pieces of them that we would’ve never gotten if the shooting hadn’t happened right before they died.”

Brooke posted a Facebook message stating: “Our mom was so full of life, always laughing and dancing. She made our lives what they are today. Our dad was the strongest man we have and will ever meet in our lives.” The daughter shared some of the advice her parents gave their children: “Do not let bad things affect your life” and “move on and be happy.”

Sixteen-year-old Madison Carver rushed out of her house and down the street when she heard the horrific sounds of the car accident. Upon arriving at the scene, she saw the family vehicle engulfed in flames with her parents inside. Her dad was 52, one year younger than her mother. “We’ve found some peace in knowing that our parents just loved each other so much that they had to go at the same time,” the girl told the Review-Journal. “They couldn’t live without each other.”

The couple, who spent the last 22 years of their lives together, did not get married until 2010 because they wanted their daughters to be old enough to appreciate the wedding. They held the ceremony at the Little White Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip.
