Couple Pulled Over By Police - $107,000 Seized From Them But They Weren't Charged For A Crime

One Massachusetts couple says that Illinois State Police and its court system operate above the law. According to Dispatch Argus, Adam and Jennifer Perry had $107,520 seized from their vehicle when they were pulled over for speeding.

Police seized the money and the disabled couple’s vehicle, even though no drugs were found in their car. Authorities used civil forfeiture laws to take the property without filing charges on the basis that the money and vehicle could be tied to illegal activity.

A forfeiture case is pending against the Perrys in U.S. District Court, and prosecutors say they haven’t provided information on the source of the seized cash, Dispatch Argus reports.

Though Perry said in a letter to the court that he didn’t have to answer the government's questions, he explained that $7,000 came from an insurance collision payment, $50,000 from selling multiple cars, with the rest coming from personal savings, social security, and disability payments.

"This is not Nazi Germany where you can treat people like this," he wrote. "I even begged and said please just give me my truck back and you can keep the money and ill (sic) walk away from it. Still denied. You don't understand the emotional, physical and financial terrorism you have caused."

Adam Perry also said he was denied an attorney, detained for nine hours during police questioning and that his phone was illegally searched without a warrant.
