Council Members Demanding Veteran Memorial be Taken Down Get Unexpected News

Democracy is apparently alive and well in Knoxville, Iowa. How does it work? You vote for the elected official who best represent your ideals. If you don’t agree with those who are in office or what they do, then you have the power to vote them out of office.

And that’s exactly what residents from Knoxville did last November.

Though Council members April Verwers and Carolyn Formanek were told by constituents that they would be voted out of office if they voted to have a religious veterans memorial removed, they stood up for what they believed in and did it anyway.

Now they no longer hold seats on the City Council, according to KCCI.

It all started when the Americans United for Separation of Church and State argued that the memorial was religious in nature because it showed a soldier kneeling while holding a cross, and didn’t include any other religions.

KCCI reports that the artist had originally created the memorial to mark a grave, which is a throwback to the rows of white crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery in France.

Thousands in town protested the removal of the monument and exercised their Democratic powers in the voting booth the following election day.
