Cops Mistake Drywall For Cocaine - Send Innocent Man To Jail For 90 Days

Police officers are pretty accustomed to hearing every excuse in the book when they bust someone, but sometimes the suspect's claims are right on the money. In a perfect world, those claims will be proven true before jail time is served. That wasn’t the case for this man from Oviedo, Florida. As the New York Post shares, Karlos Cashe, 57, spent 90 days behind bars for cocaine possession, but the charges were way off the mark.

Cashe was pulled over for a busted headlight, but the situation quickly escalated from being a routine traffic stop. The cops would notice a mysterious white powder sprinkled around his car, and they immediately assumed it was drugs. Cashe, who works as a handyman, tried to explain that it was merely drywall. His claims fell on deaf ears.

“I know for a fact (that) it’s drywall because I’m a handyman,” he said. “I said that continuously during the arrest stop.”

The cops simply weren’t buying it. Cashe was on probation for drug charges from back in 2015, and they claim that a field test at the scene led them to believe it was cocaine. Their instincts were heightened when a drug-sniffing began going ballistic over the man’s car.

“It looks like he had a gram and he crushed it up when he saw you,” one officer can be heard saying in the video of the scene.

Cashe was hauled in, and he was denied bond due to the fact that he was already on probation. He was forced to sit in jail until lab tests came back on the substance, and those tests took a ridiculous amount of time.

“I sat there 90 days knowing I was innocent,” he said.

The results would come back, and it turns out Cashe was telling the truth. The powder came back completely negative for drugs. Cashe, who is black, feels he was being racially profiled, and he hopes to put a stop to that by speaking out.

“This is what I want to stop. I don’t want this to happen to anybody else,” he said. “I was profiled. It wasn’t the first time, it just was just the worst of those times.”

Whether or not he was racially profiled is a whole different kettle of fish, and we’ll have to wait and see if an investigation is opened up into that. As for his claims falling on deaf ears, he has a right to be upset. That being said, his criminal history doesn’t exactly help in this unusual situation, and it’s understandable to see cops err on the side of caution with someone that’s already on probation.

However, it’s downright ridiculous to have lab tests take 90 days to complete in today’s day and age. Does the police department use a lab that’s on the tip of New Zealand or something? We’ll lean towards no on that, and something seems terribly amiss when someone that’s innocent can spend 90 days in jail due to lab results taking such an inordinate amount of time.
