Cops Discover Man Hiding In Bushes, Then They See What He Was Doing

Police arrived at Gordon State College to investigate a report of a man sleeping in a tent in the bushes. They figured they would issue the man a ticket, but ended up changing his life.

Fred Barley explained to the police officer that he rode his little brother’s bike for six hours just so he could register for classes during his second semester of college. Barley, 19, carried two bags of belongings and two gallons of water with him and decided he would live in his tent for two weeks and live off a box of cereal until the dorms opened in August.

The officers were shocked by what this boy decided to do in pursuit of education. They told him that they couldn’t let him stay there, but they had a place he could crash. The officers took him to a local motel and paid for him to stay there for two nights using their own money.

“The stuff that’s happening with police officers, I am black, and he didn’t care what color I was,” Barley said, according to Mad World News. “He just helped me, and that meant a lot.”

When the officer’s wives shared Barley’s story on Facebook, hundreds stepped in to support him. The school offered to open the dorms early and the motel also offered to let him stay for free until then.

“I was shocked by how much support people will give from Lamar County and counties all over and even people from across the country that I’ve never met just wanted to help so much in my life,”said Barley. “I was just so shocked and grateful.”

The local pizzeria gave him a job, while others donated clothes, school supplies, shoes and a bike. They are also working on getting him a car. In addition to all of that, a Go Fund Me page raised more than $37,000 in donations.

“Some of the gifts aren’t as important as the friends I’ve made,” Fred admitted. “More important than everything — the clothes, the shoes — the relationships mean so much more to me.”
