Cop Goes Above And Beyond Call of Duty By Giving Young Stranger Her Kidney

The mother of a child with kidney problems in Janesville, Wisconsin needed to find a donor for her son, but sadly none of their family or friends were a match. Her son was running out of time, so she turned to Facebook to make a plea. She was shocked when a local police officer that she didn't even know came to 'protect and serve' her son.

Kristi Goll put a message out on Facebook praying for a miracle. Her eight-year-old son, Jackson Arneson, was born with a health problem called posterior urethral valves. The condition causes the kidneys to slowly lose function, so from the time Jackson was born, she knew it would only be a matter of time before a transplant would be necessary. In 2017, she got the news that the time had come.

In fact, the time had not only come, but Jackson's time was growing short. The young man needed a replacement, and the person had to have O positive blood, plus a lot of other matching antigens if the operation were to be a success.

Sadly, no relatives were a match for Jackson. All of them were tested, but it just wasn't in the cards. That's what drove Goll to appeal to strangers on social media.

Goll's post was shared thousands of times, when finally it came to the attention of Officer Lindsey Bittorf. The mother's cry for help moved her.

Bittorf, who was with the Milton Police Department, knew she was O positive and decided to have a test to see if she would match. She spent a whole day in the hospital getting tested, both psychologically and physically.

The odds of a perfect stranger being a close match were low, but as luck would have it, the officer was a perfect match.

Bittorf lives relatively close to Goll and her son, so the officer didn't have to travel far to deliver the good news. She reached out to Jackson's grandparents to arrange a meeting, and they all showed up on the doorstep one day. Bittorf was holding a big present: framed images showing she and Jackson matched.

As soon as Goll realized what was going on, she broke down and hugged the officer.

“I took an oath to serve and protect my community and now my kidney will serve and protect you,” Bittorf told Jackson.

Not long after that meeting, the cop and the young boy went into the hospital. The kidney surgery took about four hours. Both Jackson and Bittorf have recovered, and Jackson’s body accepted the transplant. His new kidney is now functioning relatively well.

There was also another great result of the encounter: Bittorf and Goll have also become best friends, and virtually no one can be their ‘how we met’ BFF story.

“I’ve told her so many times, I don’t even know how you thank somebody for doing that for you. You know, I mean as something that’s so priceless," said Goll to WMTV.

“If roles were reversed and it were my kid, I would move hell and earth for my kid, too,” Bittorf said in an interview with CNN.
