Controversial School Exam Lists Abortion As Acceptable Option

A question concerning abortion on a high school biology exam in Utah has sparked a debate, according to the Daily Mail.

Student Cody Okerlund used his phone to take a picture of the question, which stated: “(A 40-year-old woman) has just learned she’s pregnant with a child. Genetic testing has indicated that the child has Downs syndrome.
Their family doctor has recommended (the woman) have an abortion.”

The multiple-choice exam listed a number of possible answers, including getting another genetic test when the “baby is ready to be born,” or basing the decision on “religious beliefs,” the cost of rearing a child with the syndrome, “religious beliefs, financial burden (or) the mother’s health.” Other acceptable responses were letting the doctor decide, or allowing the woman to choose an abortion.

After Utahns Against Common Core and others complained, Electronic High School Principal Kathleen Webb ordered the question removed from the exam. She claimed to be unaware who wrote it, insisting that the teacher was not responsible. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that many social-media users have posted comments. Conservative education activist Oak Norton told the newspaper: “It’s getting at, really, a survey of (students’) beliefs. It’s an opinion question, and it doesn’t even include a full range of opinions.”
