Construction Worker Develops Horrifying Fungal Infection After Using Tools To Pop Zit

If you have a pimple that won’t go away on its own, treating it with an over the counter solution will typically do the trick. When that doesn’t work, you may need to kick things up a notch and try a more expensive solution that you can purchase at your neighborhood pharmacy.

If you’re still having trouble from that point, you can make an appointment with a dermatologist to get to the bottom of why your pimple just won’t go away.

Those instructions are all rather simple, and there’s nothing preventing anyone from taking those steps. Hence, it’s a little hard to process why some folks feel the need to go outside the box and deal with unsightly blemishes in their own way.

Whether it’s squeezing them, burning them, or cutting them off, additional problems or scarring can be the end result. In extreme cases, even more serious problems can arise.

That’s what happened to this unidentified construction worker in Chicago, who developed one of the more nasty infections that you will ever see. As the Daily Mail shares, he had a nagging pimple on his lower lip.

For reasons that remain unclear, he decided that he was going to drain it using a woodworking blade. Lo and behold, additional problems arose from that point.

The 23-year-old man would end up growing a rather unsightly mass where he had done his handiwork. It resembled a third lip, but it also looked like something you would see in a horror film. Yes, it was that nasty looking.

Incredibly, the worker would allow this thing to grow for seven months before he would seek medical attention.

Dermatologists were completely stunned by the man’s condition, so much so that they were inspired to write about the case in the Journal of Medicine. Turns out he had developed blastomycosis, a rare fungal infection. This is only the 50th documented case of blastomycosis caused by traumatic inoculation, but it’s believed to the first that was caused by a woodworking blade.

“It [blastomycosis] is usually observed in laboratory or morgue workers, and less frequently in dog handlers after a bite or scratch,” doctors wrote in the journal.

The man was questioned thoroughly by treating doctors, and he confirmed that he hadn’t done any traveling or had any unusual experiences of late. Outside of performing his own cosmetic surgery, that is.

It’s amazing that he let the infection get to this point before seeking attention, and that leads to a simple question: if you’re that bothered by a simple zit, how can you not be terrified by an unsightly mass growing beneath your lip?

In any event, we can all use this as further confirmation not to play doctor at home. The man’s infection was cleared up after treatment, but he wouldn’t have had to deal with that in the first place if he had just followed the awfully simple steps up above.

Perhaps the sight of what this man did to himself will inspire others to refrain from playing doctor on themselves.
