Community Bands Together to Help Young Man After His Car Was Trashed

Football fans are known for getting a little over-excited sometimes after a game. This is especially true when your team breaks a long-standing losing streak and finally emerges victorious over a long-time rival.

One small town of fans in Kentucky got carried away after their team won a game, and a young man's car got destroyed in the process. Thankfully, the townsfolk came together to rectify the situation.

Matt, a 19-year-old University of Kentucky fan, parked his car outside of a friend’s house so he could go in and watch UK play the Florida Gators. UK and the Gators have a long-standing rivalry, and UK hasn't won a game against them in over 30 years.

Needless to say, when UK won, locals went a little crazy in celebrating the victory.

"As expected from the students of UK, they trekked through the torrential downpour, through the deep potholes and puddles, to the promised land that is State Street after a good ole UK win," wrote Matt's mother, Amy Rademaker Given, on a GoFundMe campaign page. "While no couches were burned this year, probably due to the rain, and no human injuries surfaced, a small white car lost its life."

The car, Rademaker explains, had full coverage up until two weeks before the game. At that point the car was over four years old, so she dropped the full insurance for a cheaper package.

I guess she never expected an over-zealous mob of UK fans to flip it-- twice. By the time the students got through with it, the car was a complete junker. And sadly, Matt’s insurance wasn’t going to cover rioting mob damage.

“Less than two weeks ago, I dropped the coverage down to just liability since the car was getting older. Less than 2 weeks!!!” said Given.

Thankfully, the good people of Lexington, Kentucky took responsibility for the damage. The fundraiser ended up bringing in more than $3,000. Matt didn't even need the fundraiser his mother set up for him, and it was shut down shortly after getting started.

A local car dealership heard what Matt had been through and gave him a blue 2004 Mazda 3.

Photos show Matt and Given standing outside the car dealership smiling in front of his new vehicle. The young man is beaming.

On top of that, they took Matt's old car off his hands and put it in a safe place.

“We donated Matt's old car to the dealership and they are going to put it on their lot and let their customers take a swing at it! So, please show them some love and support! They are huge UK fans and they wanted to make the wrong right and boy did they!” Given reported.

“We are just overwhelmed and humbled by this entire experience,” wrote Given. “Something that started out so terrible has ended with an amazing story and memories!”

Given returned any funds that had been collected before Matt got his Mazda back to the original donors. Some people grumbled about donating before they realized that they were being issued a refund, but it looks like everything worked out in the end and everyone is happy.
