Common Mistake Changes Woman's Life Forever

On August 2, 2010, the life of now 26-year-old Bethany Benson was changed forever. Before then, she worked full-time, put herself through college, was fluent in French and had almost completed degrees in History, French and Education at Trent University. She had aspirations of becoming a teacher. Yet, on that fateful day, she took a road trip with her boyfriend and put her feet up on the dashboard. That was when a motorcycle and small vehicle collided, then a tractor trailer tried to slam on the brakes, as did Benson's boyfriend who ended up crashing into the back of the tractor trailer. It was a miracle that Benson and her boyfriend survived. Although, due to her feet on the dashboard, and the airbag deploying, it forcefully hit her hamstring, which pushed her feet through the windshield.

In addition, her knees slammed into her eyes, causing her left eye socket and cheekbone to crack. Moreover, she broke her nose, eight bones in her left foot and three bones in her right foot. The impact also caused her brain to start bleeding. She said “I always used to put my feet up. It’s easier on the back if you have your feet up. I never even thought that it could be so dangerous.” Although her external injuries have healed, she lives in constant pain and has to take multiple pills everyday. She is also required to wear expensive orthopedic shoes, and the bleeding in her brain resulted in irreversible effects.

Her mother, Mary Lachapelle, said “I got back a different daughter. I lost a sweet 22-year-old who worked full-time and put herself through university. She was on a great path. I got a 13-year-old with anger issues.” Lachapelle now has to work longer so that Benson can remain on her health insurance. Benson hopes that others will learn from her experience.
