Colorado Mother Beats Cancer And Becomes Bounty Hunter

When Shanda Zapata, 35, was 19, she received her first colon cancer diagnosis. Then, 12 years later, she received her second. As a result, she has to pay off $800,000 in medical costs. So, in 2013, she became a bounty hunter to help pay off her debt.

She said, "I chose this job because I get to help people and sort of be a bad ass. When I put a child molester away, it feels great. It makes me feel that bit stronger that I can do this for my community."

The ex-Hooters waitress went on to say, "I make me feel that while, yes, I am female--I am strong. I am capable. And I can put dangerous people away." She shared some of the hazards of her job saying, "I have been shot at, lunged at with a knife, attacked by pit bulls and even had drug dealers throw needles at me like darts. You never know what is going to be behind that door when you kick it down. Everyday could be your last."

Currently, Zapata can work as a bounty hunter in 47 states and often teams up with fellow bounty hunters. She also knows Krav Maga and Brazilian jiu jitsu. Her equipment includes assault rifles and a Smith & Wesson pistol with a custom grip.

She added, "I overcame cancer twice. I was cut open. I worried I'd never recover. I lost everything in my life and now have been left with a huge debt. But now I'm out here hunting some of America's most dangerous criminals and making something of myself."
