College Student's Story Goes Viral When She's Asked To Leave Her School's Gym

More and more frequently, the news is plastered with stories of women being persecuted or targeted for dressing in a certain way. Unfortunately, Sarah Villafañe, a student at the College of Charleston, was one of many women who have been victims of discrimination based on their clothing choices.

The 19-year-old, who is a regular, was working out at her campus gym when she was approached by a staff member who told her that she needed to put on a shirt. Ms. Villafañe was confused at the request, given that her leggings and crop top were her normal attire for gym outings. When Ms. Villafañe told the employee that she was already wearing a shirt, her crop top, the staff member told her that “you need full coverage.”

Ms. Villafañe was outraged at this request, given that there were numerous men in the gym, completely shirtless and unbothered by employees. Ms. Villafañe was repeatedly told by staff to put on a shirt, however, when she refused and continued her workout, she was asked to leave. When kicked out of the gym, Ms. Villafañe took to Facebook to express her annoyance and outrage at the “gender double standard” that the gym upheld.

The gym itself maintains that Ms. Villafañe was asked to leave for purely “sanitary” reasons and not because they believed the crop top was inappropriate. Ms. Villafañe’s post went viral, with thousands of people commenting their support for Ms. Villafañe: “I cannot see anything wrong with your outfit too. It’s made for the gym. Just wear what you want and don’t go to that place no more.” Unfortunately, some individuals were not sympathetic, with one user stating “did you check what OTHERS were wearing to that gym, or did you simply decided that ‘today was the day’ that you decided to go put on a show and cause problems? You can bet that if some guy showed up in a speedo that he would have been asked to leave too.”
