College Student's Shopping Spree Lands Her Behind Bars

In 2012, Christine Jia Xin Lee, 21, was mistakenly sent a $4.6 million overdraft by Westpac banking group. Instead of reporting the mistake, she decided to spend it on designer bags in every color, a Christian Dior outfit, jewelry, snakeskin clutch bags and more. Pictures show Lee with the items when bank lawyers and independent solicitors arrived at her apartment with a court order on April 15, 2015. On a single day, she spent $220,000 at the Christian Dior shop in Sydney.

In addition, she allegedly purchased a Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin, which retails for around $150,000. Westpac has since taken action against Lee through the Supreme Court, which found a default judgment against her and the Federal Circuit Court, which ordered her estate sequestered. Lee was arrested while trying to board a flight to Malaysia several weeks ago. Her parents live in the country where she owns a three-bedroom condominium valued at around $100,000. A bank investigator asked her where she thought the money came from.

Lee said, "I thought that the money was from my parents in Malaysia." An investigator then asked her if she had any money left. She said, "I have $4,000 in cash left." The bank has recovered $1.15 million Lee allegedly transferred to a PayPal account last year. The rest of the money is missing. The case is expected to come before Waverley Local Court on Tuesday.
