College Student Fights Would-Be Robber With A Deadly Weapon

Angel Maldonado, 19, a college student who moved from New York to Connecticut in April, said that someone tried to break into his family's home around 11 a.m. on Oct. 27.

He stated, “It sounded like someone was trying to pick the lock. We had just gotten robbed a couple of weeks ago when someone stole our PlayStation.” Maldonado said he was getting ready to walk his dogs, but, sensing danger, he grabbed the samurai sword from his room and opened the door. The police say the alleged perpetrator is 30-year-old homeless man David Lyons.

Maldonado went on to state “I opened the door, and there he was, staring at me on the back porch. He started to try and push his way in, and I slashed him.” Maldonado and his dogs then allegedly chased Lyons off the porch and into a nearby road, that's when Maldonado flagged down a car to call the police. Police said Lyons was detained by state troopers a short distance away from Maldonado's home.

Lyons was then taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and then released. Lyons' was charged with burglary, larceny and breach of peace, and his bail was set at $25,000. His arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 28. Maldonado added, “I think people in these types of situations have that flight-or-fight instinct. I chose to fight.”
