Coffee Recalled After It's Discovered It May Kill You

It may be an unusual name for coffee, but no one ever expected the brand 'Death Wish' to be quite so prophetic. The coffee manufacturer is recalling one of its coffee drink products due to possible botulism tainting. Talk about truth in advertising.

The uniquely named brand of coffee comes with a black package that has a white skull and crossbones as a logo. It's marketed as the 'World's Strongest Coffee', with an average of 728 mg of caffeine per 12 oz serving. In comparison, 12 oz of the average cup of Joe would contain 355 mg of caffeine. A cup of the black brew packs quite a punch, but that’s not the danger that landed it on the recall list.

"Death Wish" is recalling their 11-oz Nitro Cold Brew, and has put out a press release warning customers that drinking it could make you sick, or – as the name implies—could possibly be deadly.

The company issued a voluntary recall after reviewing their manufacturing process. They found that there was a problem with their cold brew processing that could possibly lead to the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism.

No illnesses or deaths have been reported yet, says owner Mike Brown, and no actually tainted product has been reported. However, the company wants to exercise caution.

"Our customers' safety is of paramount importance and Death Wish Coffee is taking this significant, proactive step to ensure that the highest quality, safest, and of course, strongest Coffee products we produce are of industry-exceeding standards," said Brown in a statement.

Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal food poisoning. Symptoms of botulism include weakness, blurred vision, dry mouth and fatigue. Someone experiencing botulism might have droopy eyelids and experience lethargy. As fatigue increases it can lead to trouble speaking, weakness in the arms, chest muscles and legs.

People with botulism do not get fevers or lose consciousness. If botulism isn't treated, however, it could be fatal. Anyone who believes they might be suffering from the toxin should go to a hospital.

Death Wish is halting the production line of the faulty product until the problem is fixed. In the meantime, they're calling for all the product to be returned. The product was pulled from shelves and the company’s website. The company warns fans of the product that some cans with possible contaminates could have been sold by a third-party vendor. If you bought a can of the tainted brew over the last 60 days, just bring it back to a store or contact the company and you'll receive a full refund.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause our customers and our retail partners, but we believe this is the right precautionary measure to take," said the company's owner.

It looks like extreme coffee lovers are just going to have to get their super-brew from a different product, at least for the time being.
