Coast Guard Makes Big Bust

In an astounding haul, the U.S. Coast Guard seized 12,000 pounds of cocaine valued at around $181 million when it intercepted a semi-submersible vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean last month. It was a 40-foot long homemade vessel that was noticed on July 18 by U.S. Navy aircraft, which then immediately contacted the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Stratton that was 200 miles south of Mexico.

The Coast Guard found 16,000 pounds of cocaine on board and took four men into custody. They also removed six tons of cocaine, while leaving two tons to help balance it as the Stratton attempted to tow it to shore. Unfortunately, the homemade vessel took on water and sank 13,000 feet of water in international waters. The Coast Guard said the bust was the largest ever semi-submersible interdiction in its history. The California-based Stratton also seized 5,400 pounds of cocaine in June.
