Churchgoers Spot Teen In Trouble, Then Chase Down Rapist

A group of churchgoers in California stumbled across a disturbing scene. A 15-year-old girl was running through the desert, naked, screaming for help. The church-going group stopped and went to see what was going on, then chased down the teen's rapist. They managed to hold him there until authorities came and arrested the culprit.

Joseph Cornett was the 42-year-old man that the group of Christians chased after they spotted the naked and afraid girl. Cornett ran from the group and denied any wrongdoing, but the group was going to make him wait and sort through it with authorities.

"She’s a prostitute! She’s a prostitute, dude!" Cornett can be heard saying on film as one of the Good Samaritans caught the incident with a camera.

Cornett almost got away. He jumped in his car and sped off. The men chased him, and the suspect ended up crashing his car into a mound of dirt and sand. Thankfully, he got stuck and was unable to escape.

The bystanders surrounded Cornett and kept him in place until police arrived.

Cornett resisted arrest, spitting at cops. He had to be taken away on a stretcher with a mask on his face to prevent police from getting splattered with saliva.

It turned out to be a very good thing that the Good Samaritans stopped the culprit. Cornett convinced the young girl that he was a police officer. He stopped her on the way to school and convinced her that he was arresting her for jaywalking. He then kidnapped the young teen girl and raped her in an abandoned mobile classroom.

She was one of two girls he abducted and sexually assaulted. Two weeks earlier, police say Cornett had spotted a young girl walking and coaxed her into letting him give her a ride. When she got in the car, he took off with her and assaulted her.

Making matters even worse, Cornett is HIV positive and put his victims and captors at risk for contracting the virus.

Cornett was arrested and eventually convicted of 15 felony charges, including charges of sexual penetration by a foreign object of a minor. The judge called Cornett a 'monster' and sentenced him to 100 years in prison, where he will remain for the rest of his natural life.

Cornett also had to be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

That group of good Samaritans who spotted the teen were smart, and very brave, to intervene. Cornett is a big guy, and potentially extremely dangerous. They risked their own lives to do the right thing. Thankfully, because of their courageous and selfless actions, the girl was rescued before worse could have been done to her. They also managed to prevent countless other attacks from taking place at the hands of the violent rapist— who knows how many young girls he would have assaulted in the coming weeks before getting caught by cops?
