Christian Pastor Helps Women Getting Abortions

A Christian pastor has ruffled more than a few feathers for volunteering at Planned Parenthood. Conservatives have slammed her, but she claims she does it 'because of her faith.'

Emma Akpan, a minister with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church could no longer accept the attacks on Planned Parenthood. Some of those attacks have been violent on clinics, others attacks have been in the form of legislation that would cut funding or limit reproductive rights.

“I can no longer watch as the communities I love are threatened and harmed,” wrote Akpan. “As a clinic volunteer and reproductive justice advocate, I know how important clinics are to the women and men who rely on them for quality care and health information — including many Black women.”

Apkan helps by greeting women entering a clinic in Raleigh, North Carolina to ensure them safe access. Pro-life protestors outside of the clinic where Apkan volunteers have made her furious. She says “[t]hey make it seem as if Black women do not make our own decisions, that we are simply pawns in America’s racist society.”

A pro-choice website has lashed out at Apkan for her pro-choice stance. “The violence committed every year against unborn babies, especially African American babies, is astronomical. Approximately 363,000 unborn black babies are killed every year in violent abortions in America,” wrote Micaiah Bilger of LifeNews.com. “And the group doing more abortions than any other is Planned Parenthood, a business grounded in eugenics that pushes the kind of violence and discrimination that Akpan claims to be working against.”

“White supremacy dictates that we shouldn’t be allowed to get health care, to worship, or even to leave our homes,” says Apkan. “In every instance, the intention is to intimidate us. These attacks are linked, and so we Black leaders in faith communities must be linked in our response.”
