Watch The Horrifying Moment An Enormous Cargo Ship Nearly Capsizes

A YouTube video of a swaying cargo ship has gone viral after passengers and onlookers captured a video of the terrifying moment that the massive ship nearly capsized. The 1:03-minute-long video was filmed from the coast of South Africa.

According to the Daily Mail, the ship’s swaying motion was an aggregate result of extreme winds and pummeling coastal waves. Online commenters believe that – during its most severe sways – the ship was rolling at a 20 to 30-degree angle.

Fortunately, the endangered cargo ship managed to evade the treacherous shore break and reach the calm and deep waters of a nearby harbor. No injuries or deaths were reported among the ship’s crew.

Since being uploaded to YouTube, the stomach-churning video has received thousands of views and hundreds of comments. The video’s caption reads:

“This couple was strolling at the harbor when they noticed the sea was quite rough and the wind was very forceful. They then spotted a ship that was wobbling back and forth and looked like it was going to fall over. Luckily, the ship made it safely to the harbor.”

Unsurprisingly, online commenters have used the incident to criticize the crew and captain of the cargo ship. “The prudent mariner would have taken on ballast,” wrote ‘JimmyJam’.

“Most modern ships can take on sea water as ballast and be prepared for the sea conditions. The vessel Master should be fired for putting his ship and crew in harms way.”

Another commenter, ‘Deus Vult’, gave further (unverified) information about the cargo ship, writing: “It is a PCTC (Pure Car & Truck Carrier) 'surfing' into what looks like the break waters....Combination of swell and wind directions but fully under control. Just another day on the bridge of a ship. Vessel is not 'huge' as only approx. 200 meter long which is nothing special these days.”

The exchange in the comments section heated up when another user, ‘rolf kitching’, replied to Deus Vult: “It was rolling so much because it was empty and by the look of it not properly trimmed down using ballast tanks to make it more stable."

"These big ships are like reverse icebergs with only 10% of the vessel underwater. They are also susceptible to wind when it is blowing against the side and its side thrusters were probably working overtime trying to keep it from being blown onto the shore. This also has the unfortunate risk of increasing the rocking movement of the vessel.”

Since the 2016 sinking of the Cemfjord, a Scottish cargo ship, the captains of over-sized vessels have been under increased oversight and safety scrutiny.

After investigating the sinking of the Cemfjord, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch declared that the ship’s captain, Pawel Chruscinski, made the situation worse, emphasizing that the actual incident “was almost certainly a result of poor passage-planning, an underestimation of the severity of the conditions and perceived or actual commercial pressure to press ahead with the voyage.”
