Caretakers Arrested For Neglect When Child Shows Up To School In Poor Health

The staff at a public elementary school in Panama City Beach were completely stunned by the condition a six-year-old student came to school in, but things would begin to make sense when officers from the Bay County Sheriff's Office paid a visit to his home. As Mad World News shares, the boy’s caretakers were arrested and charged with child neglect after they discovered the repulsive conditions that the boy had been subjected to.

As the investigation unfolded, details about the unnamed little boy are positively heartbreaking. The boy is still not potty-trained at the age of six, and would often come to school wearing soiled diapers. He’s also severely underweight for his age. According to reports, the young victim weighed in at only weighed 37 lbs—the average weight for a child half his age.

That’s enough to raise some serious alarm bells in and of itself, and it’s a wonder why things went on as long as they did. It’s unclear why the school, a neighbor or family member didn’t step in any sooner. The way he came to school on this day was the last straw, it seems, and impossible to ignore. It finally pushed the school into action.

The young child showed up at school completely infested with bed bugs. It was so bad that the creepy crawly things were all over his hair and clothes. Not only that, the lunch he had brought in from home was also covered with them. When teachers got a closer look at the boy, they would realize that he was covered with bites.

It’s hard to imagine that bad of a bed bug infestation; the insects usually try to hide in the daytime, or when people are moving around. The fact that so many were out in the open and could be seen in broad daylight away from the house makes the thought of how many were crawling around the home hard to think about without feeling like you need to shower.

If that’s not enough, the boy seemed to be staggering and in a daze. It’s common knowledge that he’s on medication for assorted problems, but it was almost as if he had been drugged. The boy would be quarantined to prevent a bed bug infestation of the entire school, and he would be sent home for the day from that point. The school would finally decide it was time to send someone to visit the boy’s home to get to the bottom of things.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office did just that, and they would find that the boy was living in horrid conditions. Additionally, they would come to believe that his caretakers were over medicating him to keep him out of their hair.

"Not just the fact that he is extremely underweight, but there is concern that he is being overmedicated so defendants can more easily supervise him. The overmedication is contributing to his health issues and is keeping him from learning at school," a report read in part.

Helena P. Jones, 54, and James Claremont Jones, 59, have been arrested and charged with child neglect. While the conditions the boy was living in ultimately falls on them, it’s pretty stunning that it took the school so long to check things out as it sounds like the boy has had ongoing problems that weren’t exactly flying under the radar.
