Caregiver Stole About $300,000 From 102-Year-Old Woman, Bought Two Houses

It’s heartless and careless to take advantage of anyone, but it’s particularly egregious when we’re talking about someone that’s either very young or very old. Edith Negus fell into the latter category, as the woman lived to the ripe old age of 102. After her passing, it was discovered that her caretaker, 59-year-old Julie Sayles, had taken advantage of her in shocking fashion.

As The Sun reports, the woman would scam the elderly woman out of an astronomical £287,688. Sayles ran a charity known as Friends of the Elderly Bridlington, and she used the woman’s lack of family to her advantage. Negus had no children of her own, but she did have a niece that she was quite close with. She had set up her estate to be left to her family upon her passing, but Sayles had other ideas.

She took advantage of the woman’s declining mental faculties to have two new wills drafted, and she would help herself to other funds that she portrayed as a gift from Negus as a ‘thank you.’ Her scam was exposed, and she had to answer for her actions in court.

“She lived through the reign of three Kings and Queens and was born before two world wars and survived being bombed in London. When she was born horse drawn vehicles were still being used on our streets, TVs had not been invented and computers were a thing of the future,” a recorder explained to Hull Crown Court. “There was no welfare state. It was a different world and it produced different people. She (Edith) had a strong work ethic and a strong save ethic.
She never realised, perhaps, she could and should have enjoyed some of the pleasures her hard earned and hard saved cash could have brought her.”

Sounds like Negus had a life that she could be quite proud of as she moved on to her final resting place. Unfortunately, she would spend her time in need in the care of a callous human being that was more concerned with enriching herself. For that, Sayles should be royally ashamed, but it doesn’t sound like she has much of a conscience to begin with.

Recorder Anthony Kelbrick summarized the matter succinctly and effectively.

“In interviews with the police and here to your jury, you told lie after lie after lie. Seeking always to answer the questions put to you, you suggested all that happened was instigated by and represented the wishes of the lady you called your friend and for whom you said you wept,” he said. “For merciless fraudsters like you, there can only be one sentence - prison.”

The court agreed with that assessment, and the fraudster has been sentenced to nine years in prison for her revolting actions. Perhaps she can spend that time examining herself and determining exactly why she felt it was perfectly appropriate to take the hard-earned money of someone else, as opposed to perhaps putting in the effort necessary to attain the things she so desired.
