Brutal Chinese Wedding Tradition Leaves The Best Man With A Severe Concussion

A Chinese wedding tradition has gone horribly wrong after it left the groom’s best man unconscious and concussed. Footage captured on the guest’s mobile phones shows the horrifying moment that the best man – who was being swung up and down by six other people – slams his head and spine on the ground of a wedding in Dongying, Shandong Province. According to the Dailymail, the dangerous swinging motion is a traditional celebration and prank at weddings in east China. Known as ‘Da Hang’, the tradition began in east China’s rural areas as a way to entertain the bride and groom. It is not known how long the Chinese tradition has persisted.

In a traditional Da Hang prank, the man being swung and dropped onto the floor is supposed to have a mattress under their back. However, the prank shown in the footage has no mattress and the best man is simply dropped onto the hard-concrete floor.

The mobile phone video appears to show the man slumping into unconsciousness immediately after his head cracks onto the concrete floor. The six men swinging him pause momentarily, while onlookers whisper and grin unknowingly. At this stage, there is no evidence that any of the wedding goers holding the best man had any intention of letting him hit the ground with such force.

After several uncomfortable seconds, it quickly becomes clear that the unnamed best man isn’t faking his unconsciousness. A second video shows the man groggily reaching to place his hands on his head before slumping back into unconsciousness.

The worried guests quickly call an ambulance to the wedding, laying the best man on a rug while they wait. When paramedics arrived, the groggy man was transferred to a nearby hospital. After being looked over, doctors at a hospital in Kenli District ascertained that the best man had suffered a concussion from the impact. An individual close to the best man (who also happens to be a spokesperson for the Local People's Government of Kenli District) has revealed that the concussed wedding goer will be opting out of any traditional wedding pranks in future.

Luckily, the best man’s friend was confident that his buddy would be out of the hospital soon. “We have asked the hospital and understood that he had a concussion but no life-threatening risks,” he told Kenli reporters.

Online commenters have unpacked the incident with varying degrees of sarcasm and thankfulness. While many social media users are glad the best man survived, the general consensus is that the ‘prank’ is dangerous and unsuitable as a form of wedding entertainment. “Looks as if he banged his head. Not good for a wedding prank. What's wrong with doing a cheeky speech,” wrote ‘wazzy’ on the Dailymail.

It remains unclear if the incident occurred before or after the wedding celebrations had commenced. However, many online commenters have theorized that the prank must have involved alcohol and thus, must have occurred after the ceremony.
