Brooklyn Brownstone Owner Sued After He Painted Historical Building This Color
When 59-year-old Evette Simmons, noticed that her neighbor had painted over the bottom exterior wall of her house with black paint, she was livid. The historic, century-old Brownstone in Brooklyn, New York, had been haphazardly painted with black paint to match the exterior of the neighboring house. On top of this, a hand railing was also installed into the wall without Ms. Simmons’ permission.
As a result of the incident, Ms. Simmons’ neighbors, Joe and Abraham Mashiah, are facing a law suit after they took it upon themselves to repaint and redecorate her historic Brownstone building. Ms. Simmons has told reporters that “when [she] saw the paint on the side of the exterior wall and the hand drill in the back [she] was so angry. I literally drive around the block a few times.”
Not only did Ms. Simmons have to deal with the fact that half her historic house was ruined by the paint job, she also faced fines when the neighboring couple, Joe, and Abraham, left an old bathtub and other assorted trash items out the front of her property, for which Ms. Simmons got booked.
Ms. Simmons was mortified at the modifications made to her home, a family home owned for generations past in her family. While Mr. and Mrs. Mashieh offered to pay to have the wall returned to its original state, Ms. Simmon’s was not about to take any chances, deciding to draft up a legal agreement. However, when Ms. Simmons attempted to present the agreement, her neighbors were nowhere to be found. Taking the matter to small claims court, Ms. Simmons has had the repair damage valued at around $8,000, highlighting the fact that “you can’t just paint over it… you have to chisel it off and then rebuild it up. It’s a process.” To help drum up support for the travesty, Ms. Simmons has started a petition to help get justice for her iconic home.
