Bride Creates 17 ‘Angel Gowns’ For Parents That Have Lost Children

Instead of putting your wedding dress in a box where it will never be used again, some women like Justi Bates have found a loving way for their wedding gowns to live on.

Bates donated her dress to be made into an Angel Gown or tiny white outfits that are similar looking to baptismal gowns and are used to clothe babies that die, according to Little Things.

“Today, I received my wedding gown back. I sent it off earlier this year to be made into angel gowns for babies that don’t make it home from the hospital, and I’ll be donating them to the NICU at Vanderbilt,” Bates wrote in the Facebook group Quilting. “These 17 little gowns were made from my dress, and as beautiful as they are, I pray they are never needed.”

Angel gowns are typically used for stillborn babies who pass away early on, often because they are born premature. These babies usually don’t have many clothes yet so angel gown makers create these outfits so that the child can be buried in it, offering some dignity to mourning parents.

Buying a burial outfit for their newborn can be a task that is too much for a parent to bear so neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) often offer parents an angel gown. They are often made from bridal gowns. So now women are donating their gowns so it can live on to serve a better purpose as an “angel gown.”
