Boy Shocks Doctors After They Say He Would Never Walk or Talk

Blake Roberts is a four-year-old boy with a rare genetic condition causing developmental problems.

Doctors had warned his parents, Charlotte, 28, and Darren Roberts, 34, from Wrexham that Blake would never walk or talk. Yet, just last week and in front of hundreds of parents, grandparents, staff and children, the young boy walked dozens of steps on his own across the stage.

His mother said "Blake is a true Christmas miracle. We were told he would never walk and I couldn't believe my eyes when he tottered across the stage. I was sobbing. It had become something of a tradition for Blake to smash his milestones at Christmas; he first learned to sit up on New Year's Day 2012, he started to crawl for Christmas 2013 and a Christmas 2014 he used his walking frame for the first time. For me, Christmas is complete. I don't need any presents or any material treats. Just to see my little boy walking, and the happiness in his eyes, he made my Christmas wish come true."

When Blake was three months, he was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called 15q25-QTER. Blake is one of only six children in the world with the disorder.

Charlotte stated, "Because the condition was so rare, there was on information or support available. The doctors couldn't tell us what lay ahead. They told us that the other five children, like Blake, could not walk or talk and that we should not expect too much."

Charlotte went on to say "Blake had very definite ideas about what he did and didn't like. Though he didn't talk he could communicate perfectly. We took a lot of strength from him." Even after he learned to walk using a frame, doctors insisted that he would never walk unaided.

Charlotte said "Early in December, Blake's teacher phoned me, all excited, to say Blake had taken a couple of steps on his own."

Blake wasn't able to do the same thing at home though. At his nativity performance later that week, he played a sheep visiting the baby Jesus. That's when he decided to show the world that he could take 12 steps on his own.

His mother added "I burst into tears and everyone who knew Blake was crying too. It was incredibly emotional. Blake was clapping and smiling. He knew what he had done."
