Boy Poisoned By Backyard Critter

In Mississippi, Wyatt McCaskill a 7-year-old boy from Horn Lake was playing in his yard when he found a puss moth caterpillar and picked it up. Wyatt said “We were throwing leaves at each other, and I picked up one and it stung me." The moth carries painful poison in its hair and is highly dangerous. Soon after, Wyatt felt intense pain that moved from his finger, to his arm, and then to his chest. His mother, Kelli McCaskill, said "“He is in the most pain I've ever seen him in. Sick to his stomach."

Kelli rushed him to the hospital, thinking he'd been stung by a bee--once there, she learned of the caterpillar's dangerous sting. Kelli stated “They are the most poisonous, so I heard that their sting can be more painful than a jellyfish or bee." Now, Kelli and her son are warning other families to steer clear of the fuzzy yet poisonous insects. If stung, the best thing to do is to use a piece of tape to remove the spines of fur from your skin, wash with soap and water, and then place ice on the area. The puss moth caterpillar is found in trees in Texas, Louisiana and Florida between July and November.
