Boy Claims To Have Found Site Of Ancient Mayan City

A Canadian teenager may have solved a mystery that has confounded archaeologists for years.

Gizmodo reported that William Gadoury, 15, came up with the idea of comparing the locations of certain stars with the sites of ancient temples. He claims the process produced evidence of where the long-lost Mexican city of Maya was situated.

The boy said archaeology has fascinated him ever since he learned that the Mayan calendar predicted the world would end four years ago. While studying diagrams of the universe, as well as maps depicting the locations of other Mayan communities, Gadoury determined there is a connection.

When the teenager placed the diagrams on top of the maps, he discovered that the brightest stars lined up with the cities. He said he found 22 constellations that align with 117 Mayan population centers in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The Telegraph noted that the research marks the first time anyone has linked constellations with Mayan population centers. Gadoury told Le Journal de Montreal: “I did not understand why the Maya built their cities away from rivers, on marginal lands, and in the mountains. They must have had another reason, and as they worshiped the stars, the idea came to me to verify my hypothesis. I was really surprised and excited.”
