Boston Celtics Star Kyrie Irving Shows How It's Done At Military Appreciation Night

Thoughts of the world of sports and respect for our nation’s military don't go hand in hand these days, and that’s directly attributable to the National Anthem protests that have snowballed across the National Football League. While that issue has sparked a contentious debate, it doesn’t change the fact that the various sports leagues do an excellent job of honoring our nation’s veterans. As Fox News Insider shares, another awesome example of that took place on Tuesday night in Brooklyn.

The NBA’s Brooklyn Nets welcomed the Boston Celtics to town, and the evening was noted as Military Appreciation Night. It was a simple gesture towards those that do a whole lot for our nation, but it certainly seemed like a night to remember for the veterans in attendance. Celtics star Kyrie Irving made sure it was all the more memorable for two female military members in the front row.

After the game, Irving would remove his jersey and shoes, and promptly head over and deliver them to the incredibly grateful fans. Needless to say, their response was on the epic side.

"Oh my God!" said one of the soldiers. "Thank you so much!"

Irving’s awesome gesture quickly went viral, and he’s been on the receiving end of some rightfully deserved kudos.

“@KyrieIrving @nba your gift to the vets was incredibly patriotic gesture, thank you for recognizing our vets. Good luck with your future,” shared one user.

“After last night, the NBA has a new fan. Kyrie Irving gave his game day shoes and shirt to a group of US Military fans. The NFL could learn from Irving's gratitude to Our Military,” added one commenter.

“@KyrieIrving thanks for your support of our veterans. Gestures like yours make the world a better place!#newcelticsfan,” wrote another poster.

Sports remains one of the few things that can really bring people together. That’s gotten lost in the shuffle of the anthem protests and ensuing debates, but it still remains quite true. The players that engage in such protests have every right to do so, but they’re missing out on a simple point: their platform affords them the opportunity to get their points across in ways that kneeling or sitting for the anthem never will.

“You just changed my opinion of @KyrieIrving due to your act of patriotism by giving your jersey & shoes away to our service members! Kudos to you bro! #GoCavs,” wrote one user.

“It's not often one act makes me immediately like a player, but @KyrieIrving literally giving the jersey off his back, and the shoes off his feet to 2 soldiers court side, did just that,” shared another commenter.

“@KyrieIrving for what you did last night for those troops...from a veteran .. MAD RESPECT...now have a new fan even though I bleed black and silver!!” added another user.

For at least one night, we were all able to remember the awesome things about the sports that we love. Here’s to hoping that we’ll see even more reminders moving forward.
