Famous NFL Player's Body Found

Some incredibly sad and stunning news has emanated out of the state of Indiana. James Hardy III, a former NFL player, has been found dead under some shocking circumstances. As NBC Chicago shares, Hardy’s body was found in a logjam in the Maumee River near Fort Wayne.

Details on Hardy’s death are sketchy at this point, but NBC’s Fort Wayne affiliate has shared the news in a post on social media

“BREAKING: Allen County Coroner's Office has identified the man found in the Maumee River yesterday as former Indiana Hoosiers Football and Fort Wayne Community Schools standout James Hardy III. Hardy had a brief career in the NFL from 2008-11,” the post read.

Additional details have come in courtesy of a death investigation that has been released by the Fort Wayne Police Department.

"Once on scene officers observed a body floating on the north side of the dam entangled in a log jam," the investigation reads in part. "The Fort Wayne Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team was summoned to the scene and with their resources the body was removed from the river and then taken to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center where an autopsy will be performed to determine an identification, cause and manner of death."

Hardy, 31, played two years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills at wide receiver after being selected in the second round of the 2008 draft. He would appear in 16 games during his time with the Bills, and he was able to haul in a total of 10 catches for 96 yards and two scores. The team has released a statement on his stunning passing.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of James Hardy today. We send our condolences to the Hardy family as they deal with this tragic loss," the statement read.

Prior to his pro career, Hardy played college ball at Indiana University, and he was noted as a standout player during his high school days in the Fort Wayne area. Reports indicate that his family had reported him as missing several weeks ago, but it’s unclear if he was dealing with any kind of personal crisis or if there were any addictions at play. Regardless of the circumstances, this is a stunning development for the family, as Hardy was far too young to have passed away under normal circumstances.

We’ll have to wait and see if this is determined to be a suicide, or if it turns into a homicide investigation. Speculation is making the rounds on what may be at play here, but it’s best to sit back and see what develops as the police continue their investigation. Police indicated that an employee at a water filtration plant made the shocking discovery while conducting his rounds as he walked along the catwalk of the Hosey Dam.

No word on funeral arrangements as of yet, but we’ll send our heartfelt prayers and condolences to Hardy’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly tough time.
