Bakery Owner Refuses To Make Gay Wedding Cakes: 'Our Business Is God’s Business'

A bakery is under fire after they refused to bake wedding cakes for a number of same-sex couples. Ms. Cathy Miller, the owner of ‘Tastries Bakery’ in Bakersfield, California, has maintained that her Christian beliefs prevent her from making cakes for same-sex couples and claims that she has had this policy in place for the past five years.

Not one but two couples took to Facebook to complain about Ms. Miller’s policy after they were refused entry to a wedding cake tasting event at the bakery.

Labeled a ‘cake date’, Ms. Miller regularly hosts cake tasting events for soon-to-be-married couples. Engaged couples can sample various cakes, fillings and frostings before sitting down with Ms. Miller and designing their very own cake for their special day.

However, Ms. Miller was taken aback when she was approached by two same-sex partners looking to design their cakes. After realizing that the cakes she was designing were not for a marriage between a man and woman, Ms. Miller told the two couples that she would “transfer” their orders to another bakery, ‘Gimme Some Sugar Cakes,’ who also happened to be her fiercest competitor.

The first individual to complain was Ted Freitas, who took to Facebook to criticize Ms. Miller for her blatant refusal to serve the same-sex couple. When Mr. Freitas approached Ms. Miller with his fiancé, Adam Ramos, and Mr. Ramos’ mother, to design their cake, Ms. Miller was quick to assume that it was Mr. Freitas and Ms. Ramos that were getting married.

However, when Mr. Freitas informed her that it was actually for himself and Mr. Ramos, Ms. Miller refused. “

When we let her know that it’s for us, she quickly (without hesitation) replies, ‘Well I’m going to transfer your order to Stephanie at Gimme Some Sugar Cakes’,” Mr. Freitas wrote. “She stands up, walks away and calls Stephanie to ‘transfer’ us (I think she meant to say REFUSE SERVICE to us) and refer us for an appointment.”

“After she leaves a voicemail with Stephanie she comes back to update us and says, ‘Ok, I've called her and left a message. We can do the design and Stephanie can do the filling. You’re welcome to stay and enjoy MY cupcakes...' and walks off,” Mr. Freitas continued before concluding, “Discrimination is alive and well in this f'ed up world.”

Another couple who also visited the cake tasting were left berated by Ms. Miller and denied service. Ms. Eileen Del Rio was attending Ms. Miller’s cake tasting with her fiancée, Wendy, and was looking forward to deciding on their reception's masterpiece when Ms. Miller told them that she doesn’t “condone same sex marriages and will have no part in the process.”

Ms. Miller has since removed her bakery’s social media accounts after receiving countless messages of disgust and has since created new accounts.

Despite this, Ms. Miller has defended her choice, stating in a TV interview, “My conscience will not allow me to participate in things that I feel are wrong. Our business is God’s business; we work for him. Participating in the celebration of a same-sex marriage goes against my conscience. I shouldn’t be picked on because of my beliefs.”
