Backpacking Woman Gets Bitten By Bug - Then This Comes Out Of Her

When travelling, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and mindful of your belongings. In comparison to robbery or physical injury, the majority of backpackers don’t count insect bites as a danger while travelling. However, one 28-year-old woman, known only as Ms. Gu, was forced to reassess this idea after being bitten by a ‘peanut-sized’ insect while backpacking in a Brazilian rainforest.

Although she thought nothing of it at the time, this bite would turn into an incredibly painful and disgusting wound that would lead to a surreal scene that felt like it was straight from a horror movie. When she returned home to Shanghai, Ms. Gu noticed the three lumps left by the insect were swollen, incredibly itchy and almost split open. It was at this moment that the maggots started bursting out of the woman’s leg.

Ms. Gu was mortified when maggots, the larval stage of insect reproduction, burst from the insect bite in her leg. Doctors speculated that the insect that bit Ms. Gu was probably carrying the eggs of a human botfly or Dermatobia hominis, which were passed on to Ms. Gu. Botflies are common in Central and South America and often use carrier insects to distribute their eggs. If the eggs are not detected and removed, the maggots will generally emerge from under the skin within six to eight weeks of implantation. Although there were three small lumps left by the insect, Ms. Gu was not physically affected and proceeded to complete her trip, visiting Bolivia and other countries throughout the Amazon without further incident.

After being rushed to Longhua Hospital, doctors were able to identify two more larvae stuck under Ms. Gu’s skin. The remaining larvae required surgery for removal, however, Ms. Gu was treated with antibiotics and appears to be heading towards a full recovery. Despite the horrifying incident, Ms. Gu appears to have retained her passion for travelling.
