Backpacker Gets Nasty Surprise After This Crawls Out Of His Foot

A UK man spent the summer backpacking through Tanzania, and had no idea he brought home a stow-away. A tiny flea embedded itself at the base of the man's toe on the underside of his foot. It went completely unnoticed, until it burst out of his foot with hundreds of eggs one night.

Matthew O'Donnell, 22, was sitting on his bed late one night when he felt an unusual sensation on his foot. The tingling sensation became unpleasant and really caught his attention, so he decided to have a look. He was just in time; as he looked, a black, fattened flea burst through his skin.

The flea burst, literally, onto his bedclothes. As it burst, hundreds of little eggs fell out of it. The horrified young man was a bit traumatized.

"I looked down to see a lump and thought 'What on earth is that?' he said. "A tiny black bug dropped out, followed by 100 little white eggs tumbling after it. I had an idea of what it was because while I was out there one of my friends also got it in one of her toenails."

O'Donnell recognized it as a chigoe flea, or 'jigger'. These small parasitic fleas live in the sand in warm countries. They burrow into the flesh to feed off the hosts blood as they incubate their eggs. They're tiny and hard to spot, until they pop out very pregnant.

The mother flea dies as her eggs come spilling out of her. O'Donnell quickly scooped up all the eggs and threw them down the toilet.

"I wasn’t expecting all the eggs to come out of my foot. I wrapped it all in toilet paper and flushed it down pretty quickly," O'Donnell said. "I thought if they are going to hatch I would rather not see. The tic was proper fat, so I got rid of that pretty quickly too."

"It wasn’t painful, it was like a tingling sensation. It’s fine now, it has left like a crater sort of shape in my foot," He explained. "It was pretty creepy. I’ve basically acted as a walking incubator for a month without knowing or giving my permission. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh at the situation or run into my kitchen hysterically shouting at 3am to cut my foot off with a carving knife."

After a trip to the doctor, O'Donnell was given a clean bill of health, save for a little crater in the bottom of his foot from where the flea emerged. He's probably going to do a much better body check from now on after hiking and backpacking excursions.
