Baby Had No Brian, Doctor's Jaw Drops Three Years Later

The process of pregnancy and giving birth is a difficult experience for everyone involved. By the same token, the anxiety surrounding the event is more intense when the health of the child and/or mother is at risk.

One example of this situation involved a baby boy named Noah Wall who was born four years ago with a severe birth defect reflated to hydrocephalus. This meant he emerged from his mother’s womb with a very swollen head and almost no brain at all.

The doctors warned the mom Shelly that Noah likely wouldn’t survive long after he was born, and that even if he did, he would face a very low quality of life. The medical experts advised Shelly to terminate the pregnancy given the very low odds of a positive outcome in this situation.

Shelly, however, said she wanted to see her child into the world no matter what the risks involved. She had faith that everything would work out alright.

Her baby boy Noah was born with 98% of his brain nonfunctional due to the fluid damage from his hydrocephalus. But Noah was a miracle baby. In a one in a million case only seen a few times before, baby Noah’s brain gradually started to grow back.

Noah’s developmental process has been slower and more difficult than with a child without his health issues, but he has learn how to talk and at age four his brain is very similar to most other kids.

While he still has to deal with major health complications relating to spina bifida, Noah is a miracle child that will be known as a teaching case for medical schools across the globe.

Note that Noah and his family are the subjects of a BBC documentary about his amazing childhood and development called The Boy with No Brain.

Even though Shelly’s decision to keep with her pregnancy was an enormous risk, it was clearly the right thing to do.
