Attorney Files Lawsuit to Remove 'In God We Trust' From All US Currency

Michael Newdow is an atheist attorney who filed suit in an Ohio federal court demanding the phrase "In God We Trust" be dropped from all U.S. currency.

The California attorney argues that the statement "violates the separation of the church and the state." In addition, the suit represents 41 plaintiffs from Ohio and Michigan, which includes many atheists.

Prior to his current suit, Newdow had already tried to unsuccessfully sue the government twice claiming the phrase "Under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. He filed a 112-page document with the federal court in Akron.

Defendants include Congress and several federal agencies. In addition, it claims that letting the phrase remain on US currency is a violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.
