Athiest Has Shocking Response To Being Banned From Radio For Slamming Muslims

A British scientist and author was all set to speak at an event in California sponsored by Berkeley-based station KPFA, but his appearance was suddenly canceled. While Richard Dawkins makes no bones about the facts that he’s an atheist, there was apparently some digging made into some old remarks he had made about Islam. Organizers felt those statements were ‘hurtful,’ and the proverbial plug was pulled.

As the Daily Mail shares, the left-leaning radio station was quick to offer up apologies for everyone.

“We had booked this event based entirely on his excellent new book on science, when we didn’t know he had offended and hurt – in his tweets and other comments on Islam – so many people.
KPFA does not endorse hurtful speech. While KPFA emphatically supports serious free speech, we do not support abusive speech,” a statement read in part. “We apologize for not having had broader knowledge of Dawkins’s views much earlier. We also apologize to all those inconvenienced by this cancellation.”

Dawkins sees things differently, and he’s not about to let the slight go by without setting the record straight.

“If you had consulted me, or if you had done even rudimentary fact-checking, you would have concluded that I have never used abusive speech against Islam. I have called IslamISM 'vile' but surely you, of all people, understand that Islamism is not the same as Islam,” he replied via letter. “I have criticised the ridiculous pseudoscientific claims made by Islamic apologists ('the sun sets in a marsh' etc), and the opposition of Islamic 'scholars' to evolution and other scientific truths.”

Needless to say, Dawkins and KPFA see things quite differently. From KPFA’s perspective, a viewpoint that doesn’t fit in with the prevailing liberal viewpoint can be construed as hurtful. As such, no one could possibly bear to hear it. As Dawkins sees it, he’s expressing the viewpoint that has helped him sell a ton of books. We’ll assume the other folks that have heard what he has to say are doing just fine.

“I have criticized the appalling misogyny and homophobia of Islam, I have criticized the murdering of apostates for no crime other than their disbelief. Far from attacking Muslims, I understand – as perhaps you do not – that Muslims themselves are the prime victims of the oppressive cruelties of Islamism, especially Muslim women,” the letter continues. “I am known as a frequent critic of Christianity and have never been de-platformed for that. Why do you give Islam a free pass? Why is it fine to criticize Christianity but not Islam?”

Those are all fair points, and this is a matter that could have easily be resolved. From afar, it appears as if someone got wind of the fact that Dawkins manages to have a viewpoint that differs from one that would be found in a liberal echo chamber. That led the left wing station to panic and cancel the appearance instead of running afoul of their liberal audience.

That’s a pretty sad state of affairs, and we can all continue to weep that free speech is taking a beating. There’s nothing ‘hurtful’ about what Dawkins has to say. He’s simply expressing an educated viewpoint. Agreeing or disagreeing with that viewpoint is perfectly fine, but to act as if his views are an affront to humanity is insulting.
