Atheist Group Asks School To Refrain From Praying, Students Answer Boldly

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist activist group, has contacted Ashdown School District Superintendent Jason Sanders to notify him of unwarranted prayer occurring at the school. The organization claims that the school's band director and others were leading prayer during school functions.

Sanders responded in a way unexpected, he said “We feel like … the freedom of our students to express themselves will hold up in a court of law. We’re not going to stop any student who wants to exercise their freedom of religious expression such as a prayer.”

Sanders also contacted the Alliance for Defending Freedom and was assured he was not breaking any laws. When students found out about the complaint, they proudly walked onto the football field before the start of a football game last Friday and knelt on the ground to pray.

They were then joined by fans and students from both teams--including the referees. According to Freedom From Religion Staff Attorney Elizabeth Cavell, the organization was contacted by a concerned student. “We were informed that staff are participating in prayer or inappropriately injecting religion into their public school role."
