Angry Dad Calls Out Teacher for Attempting to Politically Indoctrinate Her Students

A high school student in British Colombia, Canada showed his father a recent school assignment. The lesson was about political parties and what their different views were. In an ideal world, the lesson would have been presented objectively and in a politically neutral way, but the teacher clearly could not put aside her own personal bias to teach the topic effectively.

The father is spreading the word in hopes that other parents will be more vigilant.

Matt Defouw says his 10th-grade son, who attends Valleyview Secondary School in Kamloops, sent him a copy of his most recent assignment. The partisan politics worksheet attempted to gauge a student's understanding of where each party stands on the issues, but the teacher who gave the assignment seemed to be more interested in showing her own opinion.

The dad could not believe his eyes and posted the assignment on Facebook.

“I cannot let this slide. It must be exposed, discussed, and then expediently rectified," DeFouw said, sharing the image.

The paper showed a series of questions, along with the teacher's answers to each question. The answers were supposed to show which side of the political spectrum a person with certain views might fall.

The questions seemed to be desperately trying to villainize right-wing politics, while painting left-wing politics as benevolent and caring.

"A person who is racist," was one of the questions. The answer was 'right'.

"A person who believes that women should stay home and be mothers," another question read. The answer was also 'right'.

The teacher answered 'left' to questions such as, "A person who believes in higher minimum wage," and, "A person who believes that Canada should send aid to Third World Countries."

DeFouw, who identifies as a conservative, was stunned by the assignment.

"This is 1984-esque propaganda at its very worst. It is essentially molding the next generation of voters to believe that Conservatives or people 'on the right' are misogynist racists who hate immigrants and want to enact a brutal police state," he wrote.

"On this single page, there is more bigotry, divisive evil, lies, and malice than I could even imagine as a conspiracy theory or piece of political satire if I didn't see it with my own eyes," DeFouw continued. This is what is being taught to our children."

"This is a travesty and needs to be exposed," he added.

People were outraged. Word got back to the Kamloops-Thompson School District, and a representative of the district contacted the DeFouw family. Assistant superintendent Barb Hamblett told Mr. DeFouw and his wife, Tarlene, that she agreed that the assignment showed bias.

"I have met with the classroom teacher and shared your concerns," she wrote. "Although there was no intent to cause confusion for students, the teacher acknowledged that the Social Studies worksheet did not present a balanced view of the political spectrum and it was an over simplification of a very complex issue.

In this acknowledgement, she sees there is a need to circle back and revisit the concepts from the lesson."

DeFouw is not alone in his feelings about the imbalanced lesson. Some of the students told Global News that it made them uncomfortable.

"It's basically a teacher saying, ‘This is my opinion — learn it and it will be yours too,'” said one student.

Another said the assignment was 'not really fair.”

DeFouw is not seeking to have the teacher punished. He would rather use the incident as a springboard for further discussion about the complexities of partisan politics.
