Ancient Settlement Found Older Than Egyptian Pyramids

One of the most amazing and mysterious discoveries of ancient history was made in 1850 by a farmer in Scotland. He moved a rock on the island of Orkney and discovered a dwelling hidden for thousands of years.

Even more remarkable was how it was so well preserved. In fact, it was an entirely hidden city. The settlement was named Skara Brae. Researchers think it is over 5,000 years old, which means it is more ancient than the great pyramids.

In addition, researchers believe that this is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Great Britain. Only eight houses remain, but it is believed that the settlement housed between 50 to 100 people. All of the homes were connected through a tunnel system. Although, they could be separated using large stone doors.

Furthermore, each hut had several bedding areas. There was usually a large one that may have been meant for the head of the house. The houses all had a waterproof storage bin, that show that live fish were probably kept in the huts and maybe their main source of food. Yet, questions still remain about this settlement and its people and may always remain.
