This American Tourist Kissed Hitler - He Wasn't Pleased

There are many words that come to mind when thoughts turn to Adolf Hitler, but the word kissable is typically not among them. Of course, not everyone sees the world in the exact same fashion, so that word had to have popped in someone’s head at some point, right? It has, and there’s even video evidence to prove it. An American tourist caused quite a stir back in 1936 when she leaned in not once - but twice - to give the fuhrer a peck on the check.

As the Daily Mail shares, the German leader wasn’t all that pleased. The scene went down at the Berlin Olympics, which Hitler viewed as a prime opportunity to prove the superiority of the aryan race. That didn’t come to fruition, as black American Jesse Owens stole the show by winning four gold medals and becoming a worldwide sensation for his athletic prowess. In any event, Carla de Vries of Norwalk, California was at the games, and she came across Hitler in the stands.

The men’s 1500m freestyle event had just wrapped up, and she decided to approach him for an autograph. That’s when she went in for the kill - so to speak. She leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek, but she was rebuffed in her advances. Undeterred, she gave it another shot. This time, she was successful. The whole scene was captured on video, and she would gain worldwide fame as ‘the woman that kissed Hitler.’

Hitler was pretty ticked off, and he banned the footage in his country out of fears that it would make him appear weak. He would also drop the hammer on his security staff, as many were fired over the lapse. So exactly what was she thinking here? After she gained plenty of notoriety for her actions, she offered up some thoughts.

“Why, I simply embraced him [Hitler] because he appeared so friendly and gracious,” she explained. “I don't know why I did it. Certainly, I hadn't planned such a thing. It's just that I'm a woman of impulses, I guess.”

She would also give a play-by-play account of how the opening developed, and what happened in the immediate aftermath.

“It happened when I went down to take Hitler's picture with my small movie camera. Hitler was leaning forward, smiling, and he seemed so friendly that I just stepped up and asked for his autograph, which he wrote on my swimming ticket. He kept on smiling and so I kissed him,” de Vries added. “People sitting near Der Fuhrer's box began to cheer and applaud so loudly that I ran back to my husband and told him we had better leave.”

Leaving appears to be the wisest choice that she made that day, but we’ll resist the urge to throw stones at her impulsive decision. Either way, it’s a pretty unique little tidbit from the reign of one of the most feared leaders in the history of the world. The word kissable still remains far out of most thought processes when his name is brought up.
