Airport Employees Caught Doing This With Luggage (Video)

If you thought you didn't have to spring for that luggage lock, you might want to think again. Video has been released showing how undercover cameras have caught baggage handlers with their hands in the cookie jar. In one incident, a security guard even got into the act.

CNN obtained the video from the Miami-Dade police, who set up a sting after a string of reports. Since 2012, more than 30 handlers have been arrested after they were caught stealing on film.

When confronted with their crimes, the shocked airport workers don't know what to say.

“A lot of times there is no other response other than shock that they were caught,” said Lieutenant Pete Estis to CNN reporter Drew Griffin. "That’s ok with us. As many of them that we can take off the airfield, the better it is for everybody that travels through Miami International Airport.”

The problem isn't just in Florida, however. According to CNN, over a five-year period, some 31,000 passengers have filed complaints about valuables missing from their checked luggage. Some bags disappear entirely from TSA checkpoints.

More than 500 TSA officers have been fired since 2002 for theft. One even had a secret compartment where he hid items. They may seem like petty thefts, but it all adds up. Everything totaled up, passengers have been robbed of more than $2.5 million in goods.

Pat Gannon, police chief at Los Angeles International Airport, worries about minor thefts creating big potential threats, such as terrorism. “I think that is a breakdown in their moral fiber, and that’s why we take it very seriously here…. if we don’t pay attention to the small things that happen around here, that it will lead to much larger, larger things,” Gannon said.

Cameras and investigations have cut down the amount of theft in airlines, but it has yet to be eliminated. Law enforcement agents urge people to put their valuables in carry-on bags to avoid becoming a victim.
