After Two Decades, Mother Learns What Happened To Abducted Son

A touching reunion occurred last month in San Bernardino, California. A mother whose child was taken from her 21 years ago finally held her son in her arms again.

Steve Hernandez was kidnapped by his birth father when he was just 18 months old. Maria Mancia says she came home one day to discover her ex, her son, all documents and even photos had vanished from her home. She was devastated and never gave up the search for her little boy.

For all those years, Mancia clung tightly to the one photo she was left of her son, and to hope. Police worked with the distraught mother, but the case went cold years ago.

Hernandez's father had taken him across the border to Mexico and raised him. After more than 20 years, investigators finally received a tip on the case. They discovered Hernandez was living in Pueblo, Mexico. Now 22, Steve is a law school student.

According to Hernandez, he never knew much about his mother. His father never talked about her, and eventually disappeared and was presumed dead. A DNA match confirmed that he was Mancia's long lost child.

"I lived all these years without my mother, then to find out she's alive in another country, it was emotional," Hernandez said.

Mother and son were finally together again, and Steve was introduced to his four siblings.

"Now this anguish I've carried is gone now that I have my son back. I spent 21 years looking for him not knowing anything," said Mancia.

Hernandez, an American citizen, plans to stay in the United States and hopes to attend law school here.
