After A Nice Father's Day Meal, Grandpa Is Horrified to See Receipt

A man from Queens, New York went out for a meal with his daughter and granddaughter for Father's Day, and the family had a lovely meal. When the bill came, however, the man found a disgusting note put in that made him very worried about what he just ate.

Someone at the restaurant instructed the kitchen to spit in his food

Curtis Mays and his family went to the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden, where his daughter and granddaughter treated him to a nice meal for his special day. After eating, Mr. Mays asked the waitress for a receipt. When he saw what was written on it, he couldn't believe it and felt sick to his stomach.

“I felt like I was gonna throw up,” he said.

The receipt shows Mays' order as a cheeseburger with cheddar, well done, with toasted bread, caramel onions and mayo. Nestled between these were the instructions, "Please spit in it too!"

Mays would not have known except that his order had been messed up earlier, which is why he requested a copy of the receipt. He had already eaten the burger, so he could only wonder if kitchen staff complied with the request.

"I asked her 'Why would you do this?' And she couldn't explain it. She said she didn't do it, so I was like 'Who prints out the receipt?' So she said, 'I take it up there and print it myself. So you did it? Why are you lying about it?' She just walked off."

Mays said he didn't expect it because when he and his family first arrived, the waitress seemed very pleasant. Everything seemed to be going well. "She was very nice - she comes up to the table, 'Hi, how are you doing?'" he told ABC News 11.

Mays went up to the manager to complain about the waitress. The manager fired her on the spot and offered the family a refund.

"He was saying, 'How can we compensate you?' I was like, 'How can you compensate somebody for spitting on your food? I ate this already," added Mays.

The Department of Health gives the restaurant an A rating and the manager said that they have never had a problem like this. He also says the waitress had never given him any problems in the past, either. He chalks it up to the stress of the job, but admits what the server did was completely unacceptable.

Working in the service industry is an extremely demanding job, and waiters and waitresses experience more than their share of frustrations. A lot of people have taken to venting on receipts by adding slurs and insults in place of names, but putting in rude notes or, in some cases, adding instructions for the kitchen to do something disgusting to the food.

Even if the server was only trying to vent, it’s a bad idea all around to put those thoughts down on paper when your customer is going to see it and your employer is going to have a copy of it. It’s best to resist the urge to say something incriminating in the heat of the moment. You can always vent later to friends.
