After Judge Hands Down Sentence, This Family Sets To Brawling In Courthouse

Courtrooms can be the scene of vicious discussion and anger but open violence in the vicinity of the heavily policed buildings is quite rare. However, a recent controversial case in a Milwaukee courtroom set emotions to an all-time high and prompted two groups of people to begin fighting just outside the courtroom.

The fight broke out following the highly controversial sentencing of a young woman for putting a baby in scalding hot water. The woman in question was 22-year-old Kelly Walton who was minding her boyfriend’s 5-month-old baby and forgot to check the water temperature of the bath. However, there are also reports that Ms. Walton deliberately lowered the child into the scalding hot water, resulting in burns to over 50% of the child’s body. Ms. Walton initially pleaded innocent to the burns, asserting that the child’s skin had allergically reacted with the soap.

During the courtroom proceedings, the Milwaukee Judge sentenced Ms. Walton to 7-year jail time for child abuse and neglect. When she heard about the result, the young victim’s great grandmother, Rosalind Baker, stated: "I think it was purposely done, I don’t know why she chose to throw a little 5-month-old baby, but I’ll stand with the seven years, but she should’ve gotten the whole 15."

It was this same feeling of anger at the relatively light sentence that drove the victim’s mother and grandmother, to a violent altercation outside the courtroom. After an acquaintance of Ms. Walton named 19-year-old Taylor Morehouse began shouting at the child’s mother and two other family members, 27-year-old Shontal Williams and 47-year-old Rosalind Williams, a vicious verbal confrontation ensued.

However, the disagreement only became violent after Ms. Morehouse threw a dangerous punch at Shontai, which led to an open brawl.

Milwaukee police and some Metropolitan Police Department officers immediately responded and managed to break up the group before somebody was seriously hurt. Ms. Morehouse was subsequently arrested and charged with a slew of offenses, including disorderly conduct and battery. Fortuitously, it is believed that the Williams family members will only be charged with disorderly conduct.
